Winders

Your winders stay
on your own network

Winders finds the watch winders on your own Wi-Fi and controls them directly. There is no account and no server: nothing you do in the app is collected, and nothing is sent to RBN Apps or to anyone else.

Who is responsible

Winders (“the app”) is made by RBN Apps. Questions about this policy: service@rbnapps.com.

What the app does not do

  • No accounts or sign-in.
  • No analytics, crash reporting, tracking or advertising.
  • No third-party code: the app is built on Apple’s frameworks alone.
  • No location. The app never asks for it and never uses it.
  • No internet: every request goes to a winder on your own network, never to a server.
  • No data is sold or shared with third parties, because none is collected.

On Apple’s App Privacy labels this is Data Not Collected.

What the app keeps on your iPhone

Only the list of winders you have added, so that one which is unplugged or out of range can still be shown and explained rather than silently disappearing. For each winder:

  • its id, taken from the winder’s own hardware address, so it survives a rename;
  • the name you gave it;
  • its firmware version;
  • the address and port it last answered at on your network;
  • when it last answered;
  • the colour of its LEDs, so the home screen widget can draw it.

This is stored on your iPhone only, and in a shared container the widget reads. The app uploads it nowhere, and deleting the app removes it. It is included in your device’s own iCloud or iTunes backup if you keep one; that backup is between you and Apple.

The app also remembers that you have seen the introduction, and which winders are part-way through being set up.

Local network

Winders are found with Bonjour on the local network, which is why iOS asks for Local Network permission the first time. The app then talks to each winder directly on your own network: read its status, start or stop it, set turns per day, direction, rest, brightness, colour and the time of day.

No request leaves your network, and a winder cannot be reached from outside it at all. If you decline the permission, the app can still set up a new winder over Bluetooth, but it will not find the ones already on your Wi-Fi.

Your Wi-Fi password

Adding a winder means handing it your network name and password so it can join. You type it on your iPhone, it goes straight to that one winder over Bluetooth, and the app clears it as soon as it has been handed over. The app never stores it and never sends it anywhere else.

The winder stores it, so it can rejoin after a power cut. Forget network, on the winder’s settings screen, clears it there.

The list of networks you choose from is what the winder can see from where it stands, not a scan by your iPhone. It is shown while that screen is open and is not kept.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth does one job: finding and setting up a winder that is not on your Wi-Fi yet. The app pairs with nothing, does not use Bluetooth to work out where you are, and does not scan in the background.

Home screen widget

The widget reads the same list from the shared container on your device and reaches the winders on the same network. It sends nothing anywhere else.

Buying the app

Winders is a paid app, bought through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes the payment under Apple’s privacy policy and reports only aggregate sales to RBN Apps. We never see your name, your Apple Account or your payment details.

If you are in the EU or the UK

RBN Apps collects and processes no personal data from this app, so there is nothing held about you to request, correct or erase. What the app keeps is on your own device and under your control.

Removing your data

Delete the app and everything it kept goes with it. To remove one winder, open it and use Remove from this app on its settings screen. To clear what a winder knows — your network, its name, its settings — use Factory reset on that same screen.

Children

The app collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
