Nothing appears when someone talks

The app needs permission for the microphone and for speech recognition. If you said no the first time, iOS will not ask again: open Settings on your iPhone, scroll down to Word for Word, and turn Microphone and Speech Recognition on.

If both are on and the screen still stays empty, check that the language in the app matches the language being spoken.

The text is too small, or too pale

Open the settings inside the app and drag the size up as far as you like. The size you set is remembered. There is also a high-contrast mode, which makes the letters brighter against a darker background.

Changing the language

More than sixty languages and accents are available, and you can switch while the app is listening — you do not have to stop first. Some languages can be recognised on the iPhone itself; others need Apple’s speech service, which means an internet connection. The privacy policy explains exactly what that does and does not mean.

Trying it before paying

The first seven days are free and include everything. The week starts the first time you caption something, not when you install the app, so nothing is lost if you do not get round to it straight away.

You do not pay anything to start the trial and there is nothing to cancel if you decide to stop. The app tells you how many days are left at the top of the screen.

Your subscription

Premium is € 4,99 per month or € 49,99 per year, charged to your Apple Account. It renews automatically until you cancel it.

To cancel or change it, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before a period ends to avoid being charged for the next one; Premium stays on until the period you have paid for runs out.

New iPhone, or Premium gone missing? Tap Restore purchases on the Premium screen while signed in to the same Apple Account you bought it with.

Asking for a refund

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase.

Anything else

Write to service@rbnapps.com. It helps to say which iPhone or iPad you have and which language you were using, but do not worry if you are not sure — tell us what you saw and we will work it out.
